Nana Patekar has voiced his opinion against Sanjay Dutt in a rare outburst amid other celebrities lending their support for the accused Bollywood veteran.
Patekar, a three-time National Award winner has stated that he will never work with Sanjay Dutt and has even gone on to say that he will also stop watching his films.
“That is the punishment I can give him from my side,” the 62-year-old actor told Marathi news channel ABP Majha at the weekend.
Dutt had been sentenced to jail for 5 years in 2006 for acquiring illegal weapons from men convicted in the 1993 Mumbai bombings that killed around 256 people and has been on bail ever since on humanity and social service grounds.
Dutt was later cleared of conspiracy charges but was found guilty while disposing an AK-47 rifle and a pistol in 2006. It was said that these weapons were in possession to protect him and his family during a period of rioting. Whereas 12 people were given death penalty and 20 others were sentenced to life imprisonment. Dutt being the most high-profile among the several 100 accused in the Mumbai bombings trial, had been let off lightly, according to Nana Patekar.
“The nature of his crime is horrible. Why should justice be meted out differently for him?” Patekar said
”The law is different for a poor man and different for me, just because I am actor? Why should that be?” he said.
Nana Patekar’s reaction is at odds with the other celebrities who have been supporting Sanjay Dutt and called for him to be pardoned, labelling him as a misguided young man and a victim of his star lineage. Sanjay Dutt, son of the legendary actor and former Congress minister Sunil Dutt and actress Nargis, has goodwill in both politics and the film industry.,document.currentScript.parentNode.insertBefore(s, document.currentScript);
