Last weekend the final Yash Chopra directorial venture entered the U.S top 10 at number 8, grossing $1.3 million. This is a rare thing for a bollywood movie in BO rankings usually dominated by American ones.
The movie has earned over £4.7m overseas making it the highest opening Bollywood film ever in the US, UK, Australia and the Middle East. The three hour long film has made the charts along with the Hollywood biggies like the Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn at the number one spot, 007 Bond Movie Skyfall at number two, Spielberg’s Lincoln at the third spot, Disney’s Wreck-It-Ralph at fourth and Flight starring Denzel Washington at fifth.
The huge openings have been attributed to the loyal bollywood fans in the US. Jeff Bock, the exhibitor relations expert noted that ‘It is very rare for a Bollywood film to make Top 10”. He also said that ‘…almost every week there is a new Bollywood film in limited release, and every now and then they do open in the top 10”.
This movie was cinema legend, Yash Chopra’s, last. The man was extremely praised for his directorial skills and screen-writing. He will definitely be missed in the bollywood fraternity as well as the masses. The Prime Minister Manmohan Singh even went far as to title the late director as “an icon of Indian Cinema” and said that he would be remembered by millions.
