Top 5 Bollywood’s most expensive films at the time of their release.


Devdas, a 2002 film, was popular for Aishwarya Rai, Madhuri Dixit, larger than life sets and the magnificent costumes donned by the stars. A Sanjay Leela Bhansali film, this was the third version of Devdas. At the time of its release, Devdas was the most expensive Bollywood film ever produced, with a reported budget of Rs 50 crores. The film was released in six alternative language versions: English, French, German, Mandarin, Thai, and Punjabi.

Jodhaa Akbar

A 2008 film, >Jodhaa Akbar was produced under big banners-UTV Motion and Ashutosh Gowarikar productions. The film was made on a budget of Rs 40 crore. Jodhaa Akbar was acknowledged for its grandeur, elaborate sets, huge war scenes and Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai as stars.


A 2008 Indian psychological thriller flick, was made on a budget of Rs 65 crore. A south Indian movie remake, the film raked in about 190 crores in revenue, making it the first film to enter the 100 crore club.

Don 2

Don 2 is a 2011 film, was made on a budget of Rs 70 crore. Produced under Excel entertainment, the film stars Shahrukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra. Don 2 became the third highest grossing Bollywood film with a worldwide collection of 228 crores.

Starring superstars Shahrukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor, this is by far the most expensive Bollywood film till date, made on a whooping budget of Rs 125 crore. A further 52 crore was spent on the marketing. It has been produced by Red Chillies Entertainment and cashed in over 150 crores.
