Main Aisa Hi Hoon: A 2005 release, autistic Indraneel Thakur (Ajay Devgn), has a body of a grown man and mind of a seven year old. He works as a waiter besides raising his daughter as a single parent. Ajay’s nuanced and touching performance was a delight to the eyes. His role was critically acclaimed, though the film was a dud at the box office.

Fact: The film is a remake of I Am Sam (2001).

Koi Mil Gaya: A young, developmentally disabled Rohit (Hirthik Roshan) plays a twenty odd year old man with the brain of a twelve year old. He is bent upon continuing the work his father did in communicating with life from outer space. This leads to a wonderful miracle. The film was a blockbuster, winning three National awards and five Filmfare awards.

Fact: The role of Nisha essayed by Preity Zinta, was initially offered to Aishwarya Rai.

My Name Is Khan: Rizwan Khan (Shahrukh Khan), a Muslim child born with Asperger’s syndrome, thus impairing his social communication skills, takes up the challenge to talk with the President of the United States that he is a Khan but not a terrorist, post 9/11 terrorist attack. The film bagged 22 awards, with SRK being the best thing about the film.

Fact: Kajol’s role was initially offered to Kareena Kapoor.
Shahrukh Khan, even at home, remained in his character, to get it right on screen.

Paa: Auro (Amitabh Bachchan) is an extremely intelligent and witty 12-year-old boy with a rare genetic disorder called progeria, causing him to look like an old man. He lives with his unmarried mom (Vidya balan), a single parent. Well, the parents separated because the father (Abhishek Bachchan) wasn’t ready for marriage and a baby. Auro brings the parents together. The movie is simple and has its moments, but it doesn’t make you cry. Amitabh Bachchan’s acting was flawless. The film won 23 awards in total.

Fact: Amitabh Bachchan’s makeup took six hours to apply.

Black: The film revolves around a blind and deaf girl (Rani Mukherji), and her relationship with her elderly alcoholic teacher Debraj Sahai (Amitabh Bachchan) who himself develops Alzheimer’s disease. He takes it up as a challenge to bring back Michelle into the light.Debraj finally succumbs to his illness and dies. Black stands out among the Hindi movies. Both Rani Mukherji and Amitabh Bachchan did a brilliant job. The film won 59 awards in total.

Fact:Sanjay Leela Bhansali named the film after his favorite color.

Taare Zameen Par: The film showcases the life and imagination of eight-year-old Ishaan (Darsheel Safary) who is dyslexic. He has a very poor academic record but excels in the field of arts. His lazy, easy going and troublesome nature makes his parents pack him off to a boarding school. He is later discovered by his new art teacher (Aamir Khan), who identifies Ishaan’s problem and patiently and compassionately helps Ishaan overcome his disability. Aamir Khan did an amazing job as a director and an actor. Darsheel Safary was mind blowing. The film won 34 awards including 3 National awards.

Fact: Salman Khan suggested the movie’s title to Aamir Khan when they both met at a party.
