These days, a lot of actresses are shifting their focus from commercial cinema to woman-centered roles. While actresses like Vidya Balan, Priyanka Chopra and Kareena Kapoor carry these roles with ease others fail to do so. Here are a few films that have been hits without a prominent male actor. So, according to you the award for the best female goes to?

1. Lajja

 

Lajja is a 2001 Hindi film directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. The film is based on the plight of women in India. The movie satirizes the honor with which women are placed in society and the restrictions on them. These roles of these four women were essayed by Rekha, Madhuri Dixit, Manisha Koirala, Mahima Chaudhry. The film was a flop at the box office in India but was a commercial success outside India

2. Fashion
Madhur Bhandarkar is one of the finest directors of Indian cinema. His films usually revolve around the glamour and the lifestyle of celebrities. In Fashion he portrays the story of a girl who makes it big in the fashion industry, but then because of her attitude looses everything. And no one else could play that role of that girl better than Priyanka.

3. 7 Khoon Maaf
And Priyanka is back again. After seeing her in Fashion, Producers just wanted Priyanka in all their movies. 7 Khoon Maaf is a film is based on Ruskin Bond’s short story Susanna’s Seven Husbands. Priyanka plays the role of Susanna and once again blew us all with her performance. Though, the film wasn’t very successful, Priyanka received a lot of critical acclamation.

4.No One Killed Jessica
No One Killed Jessica was a film based on the true story of model Jessica Lal, who was murdered brutally. Vidya Balan plays the role of Jessica’s elder sister Sabrina, who is fighting for justice for her sister’s death, while Rani Mukherjee plays the role of a journalist who helps Sabrina fight along the way. Both these actresses did a wonderful job and the movie rode to success.

5.Kahaani
Kahaani without doubt is Vidya Balan’s best performance. Her role of a pregnant woman in search of her husband is admirable. She even won the best actress award for the film. The whole film was shot in Kolkata and the movie was well recieved by both, audience and the critics.
