Yuvvraaj Movie Review

yuvraaj.jpg

Yuvraaj had all the ingredients of being a superhit – superstar cast, a director with a very good track record, big budget, great music director to compose music, exotic locations, awesome ‘look’ and that extra V and A in the name.

But why does this movie fail. The answer is simple, the formula is ghisa-pita (worn n torn) and outdated. Secondly – bad bad bad script. Ghai brings us again a family melodrama that may have worked in his favor in the 80s and the early 90s but not now. His style and his writing seems to have stagnated.

Subhash Ghai claimed in an interview that his work is heavily inspired from the classics of English literature. That definitely shows in the screenplay, the sets, costumes and the backdrop of the story. But that wouldn’t make up for the story and script Mr. Ghai. Looks like he made the entire movie for himself, as he pleased, as he liked without bothering whether or not it will make sense to the millions who will watch the film.

It would’ve been more appropriate for Subhash Ghai to make this into a silent movie rather than try and have dialogues that would make you hold your head in anguish wondering whats wrong with the dialogue writer or that would make you chuckle unintentionally purely because they sound dumb. Especially the one – “Jo bete ne apne baap ki shakal sapne mein bhi na dekhi ho, woh beta nahin, woh hardcore anti-family man hai.” I mean what the….

Anyway – Coming to performances and star cast. Anil Kapoor is the saving grace who manages to pull off fairly well in a badly written role (although I failed to understand what exactly was his medical problem). Zayed Khan had a stereotypical role whose acting abilities were just about enough to sail through. Katrina Kaif, looks pretty as she is expected to, she still needs to work hard on her expressions and ofcourse her Hindi. Salman Khan, needs a nice wig or a change of hairstyle – his performance is as inconsistent as his look throughout the film. He needs a crash course on acting and Zayed needs much more.

All you can watch this movie is for the pure spectacle it provides… really beautiful to watch but painful to hear and understand.

Dostana Movie Review

dos4e.jpg

Its been a mad week, Dostana is running houseful in all the big theaters in the city and I finally got the tickets after one whole week. Nevertheless, it was worth the wait.

Why Dostana works for me? Simply because the script is amazing and the comic timing of all the actors in the act is superb. This is what the sordid multi-starrer comedies these days don’t have. A strong script with witty humor rather than slapstick acts. After a long time I have seen a movie that has made me laugh throughout… I guess the last one was Bhool Bhulaiyya.

Its a film you know you shouldn’t be taking seriously. You can enjoy watching a sexy skimpily clad Shilpa Shetty and her boob-thrusting dance in the beginning of the film. You can watch John Abraham flaunting his wash board abs and biceps giving quite a tough competition to Daniel Craig. You can watch Priyanka Chopra in her sexiest avatar so far and of course in the sizzling gold bikini. You can watch Abhishek and see how he has turned into a seasoned actor, good enough to pull up a gay act and make it memorable. You can watch this film for hours of non-stop fun and entertainment.

A mainstream commercial flick could afford to talk about a bold topic like Homosexuality only because – firstly they ‘pretend’ to be gays and secondly its supposed to be a comedy. Perhaps that is why it was easier for Karan Johar to locate the film in Miami and not Mumbai. It has subtle messages directed at the Indian audiences towards the social acceptability of homosexuality for Indian audiences and that it is really ‘OK’ to be gay… but all this under the guise of comedy.

The story gets a bit predictable and draggy in the end but as I mentioned earlier, great dialogues and good script makes it work.

I would say go for it and laugh out loud!

Zayed Khan Slapped Anil Kapoor

Zayed Khan, who plays Anil Kapoor and Salman Khan’s younger brother in Subhash Ghai’s latest release Yuvraaj, has actually given Anil Kapoor a tight slap straight across his face.

Fortunately, it was an act for the film. Subhash Ghai wanted Zayed to actually slap him so that it be more effective on screen. But the act of actually slapping Anil left Zayed embarassed.

YuvrajMovieStarcast.jpg

“I never imagined I would slap Anil Kapoor. For me, Anil is like an elder brother and is very experienced. On a personal level, I felt insulted for having slapped him. But that’s what acting is all about,” Zayed told IANS in an interview.

“Actors do things ordinary people are not allowed to do sometimes. It’s the nature of the job,” he added.

Poor guys… the effort didn’t pay off well.

Rakhi Sawant Gets a Makeover

rakhi-sawant.jpg

Rakhi Sawant has decided to spare us from her garish make-up now. She went for a makeover. She looks rather different now. People were wondering if she had a cosmetic surgery when she revealed,

“I haven’t done any cosmetic surgery. It’s my new way of doing make-up. I attended a course in London which taught me how to do the right make-up. I have decided to go for the clean natural look as opposed to the heavy make-up I used to wear before. That’s why I am looking different.”

She is supposed to have learnt the new tricks of make-up while working for Shammi Kapoor’s son Aditya Raj Kapoor’s forthcoming film Baltidevi, in which she plays the lead role.

Aditya had specifically chosen Rakhi for the lead role of his film, “I saw her on Koffee With Karan. I saw the appeal in her eyes. I fell for her the way all of India fell for her. I saw the emotion in her heart, which was begging to come out. I felt my script had similar feelings. So I went to her the next day and begged her to listen to my script. She read the script and by the fifth page, she had tears in her eyes. She said this was her story and then she hugged me.”

“Baltidevi is a story of a young girl who is married in India and taken to South Hall, London. Her marital life has a rough beginning which culminates in a divorce. It is more of a rags to riches story where a woman, who doesn’t know English, survives in a foreign country by running a dhaba. She starts the concept of Balti chicken and becomes a super cook. She then starts a franchisee and very soon becomes an icon for South Hall by taking care of migrants, people with marital problems, the brokenhearted and so on,” Aditya added.

Wish she could take a few spoken English and pronounciation classes too. Looks like the make-up classes have done a lot good to her. Atleast she is bearable now.

Katrina praises Salman and Anil

katrina-kaif-1.jpg

Katrina Kaif is eagerly awaiting the release of her next flick Showman’s Yuvraaj. The actress who stars along ace heroes like Salman Khan and Anil Kapoor is quite happy with the experience of sharing screen space with such versatile actors.

She says on her working with Salman and Anil, “They were fantastic! This was my fourth film with Anil Kapoor and he always amazes me with his body language and dialogue delivery in each of his films. And, Salman is unique in his way and so spontaneous in his acting. He wouldn’t do something he cannot relate to and will only take up something he believes in. Salman is a very dear person in my life. People read, talk and write what they feel but beyond that I wouldn’t want to comment anything else on this topic.”

Well we wish loads of luck to beautiful Kaif for her upcoming flick. :)
