The king of the film makers, Yash Chopra, is all set to make his directorial comeback. The director though, is waiting for the date books of his favorite couple, Shahrukh and Madhuri to allow him. Yashji has made his mind to cast SRK and Madhuri Dixit in his directorial comeback but sources say that Mads will only be available a little later as she is right now busy spending quality time with family in USA.
With movies under the Yash Raj Banner doing persistently bad, will this great director’s comeback be an exception?

Yash Chopra did a lot of harm to Sunny Deol by misleading him and giving him a very inferior role in the movie Darr. Aamir Khan who was supposed to play Shahrukh’s role in Darr asked for a joint narration along with Sunny which would have been the fair thing to do. Yash refused to do so.Aamir knew that Yash was playing games and decided not to do the film.

Suuny decided never to work with Yash Chopra again after the horrible way he was treated by Yash and recently Aamir turned down Yash as well. Both Sunny and Aamir should be admired for having strong principles. Neither of them would kiss up to Yash despite him being a big producer.

Shahrukh took advantage of this. Sunny knew that Sharukh was being complicit with Yash Chopra’s games which probably left Sunny feeling quite disturbed by that kind of behavior. When Sunny signed on to Darr, he had about 10 hits to his credit. Shahrukh had one Baazigar. There was no question at the time that Sunny was the bigger star, but when the movie was released and Shahrukh got most of the accolades, Yash started mnaking statements in the press saying that Shahrukh was the bigger star than Sunny. Shahrukh started films in 1992 and had one hit Baazigar and another Deewana where he played the second lead. He had several other releases that did not do well. In contrast Sunny was in the Industry for 10 years and produced several super hits. In 1990 after Ghayal, Sunny was huge and won the National Award. Ghayal was a mega blockbuster and critical a super success.Betaab,Sohni Mahiwal,Arjun, Paap Ki Duniya,Vardi ChaalBaaz, Tridev, Ghayal, Narasimha, Damini and Lootere vs Baazigar and Deewana. Really, was Shahrukh the bigger star?

People saw Darr because of Sunny Deol, Shahrukh and Juhi. No one expected Sunny Deol to get such a lame duck role in the movie. It is quite a tragedy because both Sunny and Shahrukh are strong performers and if Yash did justice to both roles, the movie would have been far better. Instead he made Sunny look like an idiot and claimed to the press that Shahrukh was a bigger star. Shahrukh probably realized that this was his chance to get into the Yash Chopra camp, so was complicit in what was going on in the movie.

Two talented actors, Sunny Deol and Aamir khan will never work with Yash Again. They both have principles. Yash made 6 big hits with Shahrukh.Sharukh won out big time in the end. One might argue that Shahrukh’s job was to follow Yash Chopra’s directions. However being aware of Yash Chopra’s games should he not have objected to it and better still insist on a joint narration with Sunny? Both he and Yash exploited Sunny Deol’s box office clout to their own benefit. Don’t forget that Sunny was huge after Ghayal… today he may not be that big but at that time he was.

There has been speculation that Yash has paid Shahrukh a lot less for the films they made together. If this is true, it worked out well for Yash as he had to pay less in production costs and made more money as far as profits are concerned. His argument may be that he made Shahrukh a star, of course forgetting the fact that many people went to see Darr first and foremost for Sunny Deol who was made a fool. Even if that argument holds true, should he not pay Shahrukh a rate that is commensurate with his box office power? He has after all made so much money off Shahrukh Khan. What is the need for the exploitation? what was the need for humiliating Sunny Deol and exploiting him? It is good that at least Aamir did not get in this mess.
